Join the ranks of the PHFD Volunteers!

Become a Volunteer Firefighter

The Park Hills Fire Department is always glad to accept applications for the position of volunteer firefighter. Volunteers make up about 73% of all firefighters in the United States. The Park Hills Fire Department has a long history of volunteer service to the city and surrounding communities.  Below are some frequently asked questions about becoming a volunteer firefighter:

I have no experience in firefighting or EMS, can I still volunteer?

Yes! No previous experience is required. The PHFD provides all training at no cost to you.

What are the requirements of becoming a member?

- Must be 18 years of age

- Must have a valid Kentucky driver's license

- Must be able to attend a minimum number of department drills

- Must be able to pass a basic criminal background check.

Do I have to purchase my own equipment?

No, the department provides all emergency protective clothing ("bunker gear"), department uniforms, pagers (alert members when an emergency call is received), and any equipment needed.

What kind of calls does the PHFD respond to?

The department responds to a wide variety of calls thoughout the year. Structure fires, EMS calls, motor vehilce accidents, CO alarms, and flooding are just a few examples of what volunteer firefighters in Park Hills can expect to respond to.

Am I required to attend all training sessions and respond to all calls?

No! While there is a minimum number of training hours required, members are not obligated to attend every department function.  All training sessions and business meetings are held on Tuesday nights.  It is encouraged that you attend as many training sessions as you are available for.  However, it is understood that you may have other commitments on these nights.

Do I have to live in the City of Park Hills to be a volunteer with PHFD?

Most PHFD volunteers live in or close to the city limits. However, sleeping quarters were recently installed to allow those that live beyond responding distance to volunteer at the Park Hills.

What are some of the benefits of becoming a volunteer firefighter?

The most obvious reward of becoming a volunteer firefigher is the ability to serve your community and help people in need. You will receive valuable training and make lifelong friends in the process as well.
